Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Jersey City Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Famco-compatible chimney caps across Jersey City, with most replacements running $280-$520 installed depending on flue size and whether the crown needs repair. Our trucks carry the common Famco galvanized and stainless-steel sizes for standard masonry flues, and we can usually match your cap and install it within a single visit. Homeowners in Jersey City typically notice the problem after a heavy rain when water starts hitting the firebox floor, or when they spot rust streaks running down the brick from a cap that’s been sagging since the last nor’easter.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco builds chimney caps in two main series that we see in Jersey City homes: the standard galvanized line and the 304 stainless-steel line. The galvanized caps carry a part number stamped on the underside lip, usually starting with “FC-” followed by the flue dimension in inches. Stainless models add an “-SS” suffix. If the stamp has worn off, measure the outside width of your flue tile at the top, not the chimney crown, Famco sizes to the flue opening, not the surrounding brick.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: Famco’s 8×13 and 8×17 caps fit the most common Jersey City flue sizes in pre-war construction, but the mounting hardware changed around 2012. Older caps use a four-leg tension bracket that grips the flue walls; newer ones switched to a collar-and-screw system. We carry both mounting kits on the truck. Aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney match Famco dimensions exactly and often outlast the original galvanized finish in Hudson County’s salt-air climate. We’re independent, not affiliated with Famco, so we recommend what actually holds up, not what carries a particular box label.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox after rain. The cap mesh has separated from the frame, or the lid has warped enough to let wind-driven rain slip past the overhang. In Jersey City’s rowhouse neighborhoods, that water has nowhere to go but down the flue.
  • Rust stains on the chimney brick below the cap. Galvanized Famco caps lose their coating at the weld points first. Once rust starts bleeding down the face, the metal underneath is already thinning and will pit through within a season or two.
  • The cap sits crooked or rocks when touched. The mounting legs have corroded or the flue tile itself has spalled, breaking the tension grip. A loose cap is a cap waiting to launch in a March wind off the harbor.
  • Birds or squirrels in the flue. Famco caps use ¾-inch mesh as standard. If you’re hearing scratching, either the mesh has torn at a corner or the entire cap has shifted enough to open a gap.
  • Visible holes or daylight through the cap lid. This is end-stage failure. The galvanized steel has perforated, usually at a low point where condensation pools. At this point the cap is doing nothing but collecting debris.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Famco-compatible cap, standard galvanized, installed $280-$360
Famco-compatible cap, 304 stainless steel, installed $380-$520
Crown repair (sealing, minor rebuild) if needed $150-$340 additional
Flue tile spalling repair before cap mount $120-$280 additional

What drives the range: flue dimensions above 13 inches wide need the larger cap sizes, which jump in material cost. Stainless adds roughly $100-$140 but carries a longer useful life in Jersey City’s freeze-thaw cycles and salt-laden air. Every cap installation includes a Level-2 camera inspection of the flue above the smoke chamber, photos you can see, and a plain-English verdict on whether the crown or flue tile needs attention before the new cap goes on. We do not bolt a cap onto damaged brick and call it done. The price we quote is the price on the invoice, no surprises. All work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check whether the cap is loose and measure the flue opening from the roof edge with a tape measure, if the roof pitch is walkable and you’re comfortable at height. Do not attempt to remove a seized or corroded cap yourself. The mounting legs on older Famco units often break off flush with the flue tile, and digging them out with the wrong tool cracks the tile. A cracked flue tile turns a $350 cap job into a $1,800 liner conversation.

We also see DIY caps bought at the big-box store that fit the flue but lack the proper overhang for Jersey City’s wind exposure, or that use mild steel mesh instead of stainless and rust solid within three years. If it’s not right, we come back until it is. For a cap that actually matches your flue and stays matched, call (732) 507-9649. We’ll measure, show you the options, and install what you choose.
