A Hearthstone company - serving Jersey City, NJ

Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown in Jersey City: What to Know First

We provide independent Copperfield chimney cap and crown service in Jersey City, with most jobs completed in a single visit and upfront pricing agreed before we start. A standard Copperfield cap replacement runs $280-$520; crown repair or coating typically falls between $340-$780 depending on flue count and access. We’re Hearthstone Chimney Co., an independent Copperfield service provider, not a factory-authorized dealer, and we’ve been working on Copperfield caps and crowns in Hudson County for over 42 years.

This page is for homeowners who already have a Copperfield cap or crown on their chimney and need it repaired, replaced, or inspected. If you’re seeing rust streaks, water in the firebox, or mortar crumbling at the crown, call us at (732) 507-9649. A live person answers, 24 hours a day.

How Copperfield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Galvanized steel cap rust-through on the 3000 series. The 3000 series uses a galvanized finish that holds up reasonably well inland but struggles in Jersey City’s salt-air environment, especially within a few blocks of the Hudson. We see rust perforation at the lid seams after 6-10 years, not the 15-20 you’d expect. Our fix: we pull the cap, assess the flue tile condition underneath, and install a replacement in stainless steel or copper if the homeowner wants to solve it for good. The 3000 series mounting brackets often seize; we cut them clean rather than forcing them and damaging the flue.
  • Multi-flue cap lid separation on the 200 series. The 200 series multi-flue caps use a bolted lid design that works fine until thermal cycling loosens the hardware. In Jersey City, where many homes run the fireplace evenings all winter, that cycling happens daily. The lid starts to rattle, then gaps, then blows off in a March wind off the river. We reattach with stainless locknuts and thread-locking compound, or replace with a welded-lid design if the hardware is too far gone.
  • Crown wash cracking beneath Copperfield caps. Copperfield caps mount to the crown or flue tile, but they don’t protect the crown itself. We regularly find solid-looking caps sitting atop crumbled crown wash, especially on 1920s Jersey City brickwork where the original crown was a thin slurry pour. Water gets under the cap flange, freezes, and pops the crown. We remove the cap, rebuild the crown with proper slope and overhang, then remount the cap with a bead of high-temp silicone that lets future removal happen without chiseling.
  • Spark arrestor mesh clogging on the 100 series. The 100 series uses a fine stainless mesh that catches embers but also catches creosote and, in Jersey City, cottonwood fluff from the riverfront parks in late spring. The mesh chokes airflow, leading to smoky fires and accelerated creosote buildup. We clean the mesh in place when possible, replace it when it’s baked shut, and advise homeowners on burn practices that reduce the problem.
  • Custom cap measurement drift on older homes. Copperfield’s custom caps are built to spec, but Jersey City’s housing stock includes chimneys that have settled, been repointed with added mortar thickness, or had flue tiles replaced with non-standard sizes. A cap ordered from a five-year-old measurement may not fit today. We measure on-site with a digital caliper and verify flue tile squareness before ordering, avoiding the two-week delay of a remade cap.

Our Copperfield Chimney Cap & Crown Process

  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, day or night. We book a window that works for you, usually within a few days.
  2. 2
Level-2 camera inspection. Our technician arrives in uniform, background-checked, and photographs the cap, crown, and flue interior. You see the photos on a tablet while we explain what we’re looking at. Russell Haines trains every tech to take his time here - he’d rather explain a small problem now than hand someone a large bill after a chimney fire.
  3. 3
Parts decision: OEM Copperfield or quality equivalent. If your cap is under warranty, we use genuine Copperfield parts and document the install for your claim. If the warranty has expired, we may recommend a Gelco or Olympia Chimney equivalent with thicker gauge steel or a welded lid, depending on your chimney’s exposure and your budget. We explain the trade-off plainly.
  4. 4
The repair or replacement. Most cap jobs take 1-2 hours; crown repair or coating takes 3-4 hours including cure time. We protect your roof and landscaping, work cleanly, and haul away the old material.
  5. 5
Post-job test and documentation. We run a draft test with smoke to confirm the cap isn’t restricting airflow, then email you the photos, the invoice, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
  6. 6
Cleanup and walkthrough. You inspect the work, ask questions, and pay only the upfront-agreed price. If it’s not right, we come back until it is.

Why Jersey City Homeowners Call Hearthstone Chimney Co. for Copperfield Work

We’ve been in Jersey City since 1984. The Paulus Hook brownstones, the Heights Victorians, the waterfront condos - we’ve worked on chimneys in all of them, and we know how Hudson County weather hits copper and steel differently than inland climates.

Our technicians carry Copperfield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, and DuraFlex inventory on the truck, so we’re not ordering parts and making you wait. Every job gets photos you can see, a plain-English verdict, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing with no arguing. Background-checked, uniformed techs. Most jobs done in one visit. A square deal: no surprises on the bill.

We also service DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco caps and crowns if your chimney has mixed brands or you’re considering a switch from Copperfield. We’ll tell you honestly when it makes sense and when it doesn’t.
