Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The Jersey City Owner’s Guide

Famco damper repair in Jersey City typically runs $220-$380 installed for standard throat dampers, and we stock the most common Famco pivot arms, springs, and plate assemblies on our trucks. Most replacements are completed in a single visit once we’ve identified your model series. Homeowners usually notice the problem first as a draft they can’t close off, or a handle that spins without catching.

The salt air coming off the Hudson and Newark Bay speeds corrosion on steel damper components, especially in Jersey City’s pre-war housing stock where original Famco units have been cycling open and shut for forty or fifty years. We’ve replaced Famco dampers in the Heights, in Paulus Hook brownstones, and in the waterfront condos near Exchange Place. The failure pattern is almost always the same: the pivot pin seizes, the homeowner forces the handle, and the cast linkage cracks.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactured throat dampers under several series designations, and the parts are not interchangeable across lines. The most common we encounter in Jersey City are the 1000 Series cast-iron throat dampers (found in masonry fireplaces built 1960-1990), the lighter 500 Series steel-plate units, and the 3000 Series adjustable-width models used in builder-grade installations from the 1980s and 1990s.

To identify yours, look for a stamped model number on the damper frame, visible from the firebox with a flashlight. The 1000 Series carries a “10-” prefix; the 500 Series is marked “5-“. If the stamp is rusted away, measure the plate width and the distance between pivot pin centers. The 1000 Series uses a 5/16-inch pivot pin; the 500 Series uses 1/4-inch. Getting this wrong means a part that won’t seat or a handle that binds.

We source OEM Famco hardware where it’s available, but Famco as a brand has consolidated manufacturing and some original components are now back-ordered indefinitely. For those situations, we use aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Olympia Chimney that match the original specs without the wait. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Famco.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The pivot pin has seized in the frame bracket, usually from rust and creosote buildup. In Jersey City’s humid summers, we’ve seen pins freeze solid after a single season of disuse. Forcing the handle typically snaps the cast linkage.
  • You feel cold air dropping down the flue even when the damper is “closed.” The plate is warped or the frame has corroded at the seat, leaving a gap. A 1/8-inch gap along a 30-inch damper leaks as much air as a 4-inch hole in your wall.
  • The damper won’t stay open; it slowly closes under its own weight. The torsion spring has weakened or the spring anchor has broken free. Famco 1000 Series springs are particularly prone to fatigue after 25,000+ cycles.
  • Rust flakes or metal debris in the firebox. The plate or frame is actively corroding. This is common in Jersey City homes within a few blocks of the water, where salt air accelerates oxidation.
  • The damper is stuck fully open and won’t respond to the handle at all. Usually indicates a complete pivot failure or a detached linkage arm. Operating the fireplace in this condition wastes enormous heat and invites downdrafts.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range
Famco damper plate & pivot assembly (standard 1000/500 Series) $220-$320
Famco 3000 Series adjustable-width replacement $280-$380
Handle & linkage repair only (if plate is sound) $140-$195
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report Included with repair

What drives the range: accessibility of the damper frame, whether the smoke shelf needs clearing to reach the hardware, and whether we’re matching OEM or fitting an aftermarket equivalent. We agree on the full price before we start. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every Famco damper repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. If it’s not right, we come back until it is.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: with the fireplace cold, shine a flashlight up the flue and confirm whether the damper plate is actually moving when you work the handle. If it isn’t, the repair is almost certainly beyond DIY. Damper springs are under tension, and the pivot hardware sits above the smoke shelf in a space most homeowners cannot reach without specialized rods and a headlamp.

We’ve been called to Jersey City homes where a well-meaning owner dislodged the smoke shelf trying to reach a stuck pivot, or dropped a wrench down the flue. The cost of retrieving it and repairing the damage exceeds the original repair by a wide margin. For a part that controls combustion airflow and carbon monoxide venting, trained installation matters. Call (732) 507-9649 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before we schedule.
